Pre Wedding Function
Indian marriages, especially the Hindu culture, are not a task of single day. This is a sacred ceremony which unites the two souls to live their life together in the future. It is the Union of the Families. A typical Hindu marriage involves function for the several days and differs from community to community.
As the days left for wedding decreases, the rituals get starts. Both the families in their homes start these pre-wedding functions in order to get prepare for the final day. They usually last 4-5 days which consists of Ganesh Puja, Sagai, Sangeet Ceremony, Tilak, Mehndi. Each of these functions have significant meaning and importance in the Indian wedding.
Ganesh Puja (Worshipping Lord)
The beginning of the wedding and the meeting of the two souls is incomplete without the god’s worship. This ritual is a holy tradition which marks the vanishing of the evilness and fulfilment of love and prosperity. This is to worship the new bond which is being formed among the families.
Sagai (Ring Ceremony)
The ring ceremony can also be called as the Roka. This is to imply that the groom and bride have been bonded in the relation from the approval of the family members. This is being conducted in the presence of the Pujari and all the significant relatives. It embarks the togetherness of two souls and they are ready to move ahead on the same path.
Usually for the Hindu culture, these ceremonies are being performed few months before and then the death of wedding is being decided. The families ask the priests to find the perfect day for binding the two souls into a holy relation.
Tilak (Groom Acceptance)
The application of Red Kumkum on the groom’s forehead. This ceremony is very significant in the Indian traditions. This function is usually attended by the male members and is being organized at the groom’s residence. The tilak is being applied from the side of bride’s family which embarks the acceptance of groom and considering him as the loving husband for his daughter.
Haldi (Turmeric Ceremony)
The resemblance is quite similar to Mehndi but this is being applied on both the bride and groom. It is to be believed that it embarks the protection of couple from evils of society. The turmeric is mixed with the rose petals and milk and applied on the skins of bride and groom with a belief to glow their skin. This ritual is being performed few days prior to wedding. You will say people wearing Yellow colour dresses on this day.
Sangeet (Music Ceremony)
This ceremony is to embark the fun and joy of this auspicious day of the bride and groom. This function is like the heartbeat of Northern families especially Punjabis. Of all the cultures and traditions of Hindu society, sangeet is the most famous ceremony for all the age groups. Mehndi (Henna Ceremony)
The ceremony is being performed majorly at the bride’s house prior to the wedding. All the guests are being invited to attend this function. The hands and legs of the bride is being decorated in the lavishing styles with Henna. The name of the groom is also being written and kept hidden for later rituals.
